AI-A double-edged sword
How Artificial Intelligence Empowers and Endangers - Our Future
Recently, one topic that has been catching everyone’s attention is AI. Billions of dollars have been invested in its development, and many people view it as the future of humanity. But from a student’s point of view, the question remains: Is AI good or bad?
A study published by Princeton University in 2024 reveals that the increasing popularity of ChatGPT and other AI tools is primarily attributed to their ability to assist with daily tasks. A significant part of this is because of students. Students now have instant and summarized access to information available on the internet, 24/7 accessibility, and aid in creativity and writing. Teachers have admitted that the projects of students don’t look old school - ‘dull’ and ‘boring’ anymore. The AI tools have enhanced the showcasing skills of students.
However, at the same time, there are growing concerns. AI has started to affect students negatively by increasing their dependency and weakening essential skills like memory, learning, and creativity. Many students now struggle to recall even simple things, and some can’t even remember where they kept their pencils!
Although project work has improved, test scores are dropping, and students’ real-life creativity is becoming almost negligible due to over-reliance on AI.
Hence, we can conclude that it is good for children to use AI, but not to be overly dependent on it.
